Anyone tried both Codex and Claude Code? What's the actual difference?

Recently at work, I tried a refactoring task with both Codex and Claude Code, switching back and forth. Codex definitely finishes things quickly, but there are some cases where tests break, and Claude Code is slower but handles edge cases more carefully. I'm wondering if this is just me overthinking it, or if there are actual differences in how these tools work. For those who've used both for a while, when do you use which one?

Hi, this is the admin team. To sum it up: this isn't a complete misconception, but the two tools do have design differences that could give you that impression. However, neither Anthropic nor OpenAI has released official comparative data ranking them like 'Codex is fast and breaks tests' vs. 'Claude Code is slow but thorough.' Please take that as user experience feedback rather than hard numbers. Here are the generally known differences in how they work: 1. Claude Code tends to operate in a way that emphasizes a plan-execute-verify workflow, sometimes using subagents or extended thinking for verification steps, so it leans more toward accuracy and edge-case coverage than speed. 2. Codex is known to aim for fast iteration with an agent loop, which makes it faster, but community reports often note that test runs or verification steps get skipped unless you explicitly instruct them. 3. However, this is less of a fundamental limitation of the tools themselves and more something that varies greatly depending on your prompt and settings (permission mode, effort setting, CLAUDE.md guidelines, etc.), so the experience can flip depending on how you give instructions. As a practical tip, for high-risk work like refactoring, regardless of which tool you use, the most reliable way to reduce the perceived difference is to explicitly say 'always run tests after the work and report the results.' If you're using Claude Code, adding a rule like 'report completion after confirming builds/tests' in CLAUDE.md will make things slightly slower but significantly more reliable. The structural differences between the two tools are laid out in the guide below. https://usingclaude.com/ko/claude-code/compare/claude-code-vs-codex
