What's the difference between the Claude Code VSCode extension and running Claude Code in the terminal?

Hello, this is the admin. To cut to the chase—the extension (sidebar) and running it from the terminal look similar on the surface, but there are real differences, and the reason context auto-detection might not feel like it's working is probably worth investigating. First, the structure. The VS Code extension is basically a graphical wrapper around the built-in CLI—to run the claude command directly in your terminal, you actually need to install the CLI separately. Installing the extension doesn't automatically add the claude command to your PATH. Context sharing works like this: 1. When the extension is on, a local MCP server (named: ide) starts inside VS Code. Whether you use the extension panel or run claude in the VS Code integrated terminal, both connect to this server and work the same way. 2. As long as you're connected to this server, any text you've selected in the editor and the file paths you have open automatically get included in your prompt's context every time you send a message. 3. But if you run claude in an external terminal app (not the VS Code integrated terminal), the connection doesn't happen automatically. You'd need to manually connect with the /ide command during your conversation. If it still doesn't feel like it's working, here's what to check. Just having a file tab open is different from actually selecting text. The prompt input field only shows "X lines selected" when you've actually highlighted text—and if the eye icon next to it is off, that selection won't reach Claude, so double-check that too. There are other feature differences as well. The extension shows edit suggestions as native diffs right in your editor where you can accept or reject them, but it only supports some of the slash commands and skills you get in the CLI. On the flip side, things like the ! shortcut to run shell commands directly and tab auto-completion are CLI-only and not in the extension.
