Is it just me or does Claude's response speed slow down significantly as conversations get longer?

Anonymous7/25/2026· Views 134
I'm having ongoing conversations with Claude Code about coding, but as the number of messages increases, response speed noticeably slows down. Sometimes responses even get cut off in the middle and I see something like a max length error. Starting a fresh conversation is definitely faster, but then I lose all the previous context. Does everyone just start over when this happens, or is there a setting that can help with this?

Hello, this is the admin. To cut to the chase—this is normal behavior, and there are ways to work around it. First, here's why it happens. Claude Code processes all your previous messages, file contents, and command history along with every new request you send. So as conversations get longer, the amount of context that needs processing grows, which naturally slows down responses. When context gets close to the limit, you might see responses cut off mid-sentence or get notifications about length limits. This is all part of the same pattern. That said, the exact context limit varies by model and plan, and the specific thresholds aren't fully published, so I can't give you a precise cutoff number. Here's how to work around it in practice: 1. Start a new conversation when the topic clearly changes. If you don't need to keep the previous context, that's the most straightforward fix. 2. Claude Code has a /compact command that summarizes and cleans up your conversation context. You can keep the core context (code patterns, file state, key decisions) while cutting the overhead—no need to completely restart. 3. We recommend splitting your workflow: use /clear when starting fresh work, and /compact when you're continuing something. Claude Code will attempt compression automatically when you get close to the limit, but using the commands yourself gives you more control. 4. For rules or project info you reference a lot, put them in a file like CLAUDE.md instead of pasting them into chat each time. This keeps conversation length shorter while preserving the context you need.
