Is there a way to turn off the Co-Authored-By that automatically gets added when committing with Claude Code?

When I make commits with Claude Code, the Co-Authored-By: Claude line always gets automatically added at the end of the message. Since it's a company repo, I'm a bit uncomfortable about it staying in the history. Is there a setting or option in CLAUDE.md to turn this off so it doesn't get added? Or do I just have to manually delete it every time after committing?

Hi, this is the admin. To get straight to the point—there's an option to turn it off, and you don't need to manually delete it after commits. Claude Code automatically adds the "Generated with Claude Code" text and a Co-Authored-By line to commits by default. You can control this through the attribution setting in settings.json. 1. To turn it off for a specific project, add the following to .claude/settings.json in the repo root (use settings.local.json if you only want it for yourself, or settings.json if you're sharing it with your team). {"attribution": {"commit": "", "pr": ""}} 2. To apply it across all your projects, put the same thing in your global settings at ~/.claude/settings.json. 3. When you set the commit value to an empty string, the entire attribution text—including the Co-Authored-By line—disappears from the commit message. When you set the pr value to an empty string, the attribution added to PR descriptions goes away too. The settings take effect right away when you save them; you don't need to restart Claude Code. One more thing—there used to be a boolean setting called includeCoAuthoredBy, but the attribution setting now replaces it (and takes priority). I'd recommend using attribution instead. I can't give you exact details on when the old one was deprecated since the official docs don't spell it out clearly. You could also add instructions like "don't add Co-Authored-By to commits" in CLAUDE.md, but that relies on the model following guidelines each time. For cases like company repos where commit history matters, disabling it structurally through settings.json is more reliable. For the full breakdown of settings file structure and other options (permissions, environment variables, tool configuration, etc.), check out the guide I put together here: https://usingclaude.com/ko/claude-code/mcp/claude-code-settings-json-guide
