I can't figure out what the difference is between Claude's Max 5x and 20x on the official pricing page

I was using Pro but ran out of usage, so I'm looking into upgrading. I checked the pricing page and Max is split into 5x and 20x options. The price difference is huge, but the explanation of actual usage or feature differences is pretty vague. I don't know which one to pick. For anyone who's actually used them—what's the real difference in practice?

Hi, this is from the admin team. To cut to the chase, the difference between Max 5x and Max 20x isn't about features—it's about usage limits. The model and features you get (Claude Code, Projects, etc.) are the same for both plans. The only difference is how many times more usage you get compared to the Pro plan. Max 5x costs $100/month and Max 20x costs $200/month. As the names suggest, they offer 5x and 20x the usage of the Pro plan respectively. That said, Anthropic doesn't publicly share exact message counts or token numbers—they're managed flexibly depending on conversation length, which model you're using, and server conditions. Here's how I'd recommend choosing: 1. If you mostly use Claude intensely during certain times of day and occasionally hit the limit, Max 5x is often enough. 2. If you're running Claude Code all day for coding work or managing multiple conversations and projects at once and frequently exceed your limit, you'll really feel the difference with Max 20x. 3. If you're unsure, try Max 5x for a month, and if you keep running out, upgrade to Max 20x. Keep in mind that upgrades and downgrades can take effect at different times depending on your billing cycle, so it's safer to double-check on the billing page. How much difference you actually feel depends on your usage patterns. People often say Max 5x is overkill if you mainly do regular chatting, but others report hitting the limit on Max 20x when doing heavy compute work like with Claude Code. Since I can't be certain about exact numbers, I'd recommend deciding based on your own actual daily usage patterns—how often you chat and whether you use Claude Code.
