Claude Pro payment — there's an international transaction fee on top of the card charge, is this normal?

Anonymous8/7/2026· Views 111
I just paid for Claude Pro yesterday, and when I checked my card app, I got charged the $20, but there was also a separate international service fee on top of that. It's not like a currency exchange discount or anything — just an extra charge. Is this because Anthropic doesn't include VAT in the payment amount, or is it just my card company charging fees for international transactions? Has anyone here switched card issuers and had the fee go away?

Hello, this is the operator/moderator. To get straight to the point, this is working as intended, and that fee is likely being charged by the card company, not Anthropic. First, let me clarify the structure. Claude Pro is charged at $20 per month based on US dollars (USD). Looking at Anthropic's official support documentation, there is a structure where VAT (value-added tax) can be charged separately depending on the billing address or business status (if you're a business, registering a tax ID makes it 0% through reverse charge). However, the specific figures for how much VAT Anthropic charges Korean individual consumers and under what conditions are not clearly stated in the official documentation, so it's unclear. However, the 'foreign service usage fee' you mentioned that appears separately from the $20 charge usually doesn't show up on the Anthropic invoice (receipt email) and often appears only as a separate item in the card company app. In this case, it's most likely a foreign transaction fee charged by the card company for overseas merchants (USD payments), not a problem caused by Anthropic omitting taxes. I'd recommend checking the following: 1. Open the receipt email from Anthropic (subject: Your receipt from Anthropic) and verify that you were charged exactly $20 and whether there's a separate tax item. 2. If the item shows up separately in your card company's app as 'foreign service fee,' 'foreign transaction fee,' etc., this is the card company's policy. Since different card companies charge different foreign transaction fee rates, you can reduce this by switching to a card with lower or no foreign transaction fees. However, to be accurate, you should check each card's specific fee rate in the card company's terms and conditions. 3. If you have doubts about VAT, contacting [email protected] directly is the most reliable way.
