What's the real difference between Max Plan's 5x and 20x?

Anonymous8/12/2026· Views 85
I'm switching from Pro to Max because I keep hitting usage limits, but I'm not sure whether to go with the 5x or 20x tier. The official page only shows the multipliers, but I can't get a feel for how many more messages I'd actually be able to send per day. I mostly use Claude for coding work and tend to do long sessions—is 5x enough, or is 20x just overkill unless you're a heavy user? Has anyone actually tried both tiers?

Hello, this is from the admin. To get straight to the point, the difference between 5x and 20x is not officially announced as a specific number like "X messages per day," and is only provided as a multiple of available compute limit. So it's difficult even for us to give you an exact number of how many more you can send in a day. Official numbers have not been disclosed. But there's a structure worth noting. 1. The Max plan provides 5x and 20x usage compared to Pro respectively, with pricing around $100 per month (5x) and $200 per month (20x). 2. The rate of limit consumption is not fixed but varies depending on conversation length, the model used (especially consuming faster as you use more Opus-series models), and the number of sessions. 3. Usage patterns like code work that maintain long context for extended periods tend to consume limits faster than general chat, so if you frequently hit limits on Pro, you might still hit them even with 5x. 4. 20x is better suited for heavy users who run multiple sessions in parallel all day or have team-level usage amounts, so it might be overkill for typical single-person code work. As a practical tip, we recommend first switching to 5x, then monitoring actual usage patterns for a few days to see how often you hit the weekly limit. If you still frequently hit it, then upgrade to 20x. Upgrading is much easier than downgrading.
