Does anyone know how to turn off Claude's memory feature?

Anonymous8/12/2026· Views 90
Lately when I open Claude, it subtly remembers things from past conversations and reflects them in its responses. It's making me uncomfortable, and I want to turn it off, but I can't find the setting anywhere. Is there a separate memory management section in account settings, or do I have to turn it off individually for each conversation? If anyone's tried this, please let me know.

Hello, this is from the admin. To get straight to the point, there is a separate memory-only menu in account settings, and it's not a structure where you have to turn it off individually for each conversation. If you go into settings on the web or desktop app, there's a memory item, and inside it there's a toggle for creating memory in conversations. When you turn this off, two options appear. 1. Pause memory: Keep the memory you've accumulated so far, but don't create new memories or reference them anymore. Even if you turn it back on later, conversations during the pause period will not be reflected in memory. 2. Clear memory: Delete all existing memory including project memory. This action cannot be undone, so you need to choose carefully. Note that if you pause or clear memory, the monthly recap feature also won't appear since it's created based on the same conversation history. If you want to keep a record of only a specific conversation, instead of turning off memory settings itself, there's also a way to start that individual conversation in secret (excluded from history) mode. This part is organized in the guide below along with search exclusion. https://usingclaude.com/ko/guides/features/claude-chat-search-incognito How the memory feature itself works and how to manage it are also detailed in the guide below. https://usingclaude.com/ko/guides/features/claude-memory-guide The exact menu names or locations may look slightly different depending on app version, so we recommend first searching for the word "memory" in settings.
