Do I have to start a new conversation when I hit a context length error during work?

Anonymous8/15/2026· Views 91
I was refactoring with Claude Code, and after going back and forth on a few files, I got a context length exceeded error and it just stopped. I had to open a new session and re-explain everything, which feels really inefficient since I lost all the previous context. I've seen people mention automatic summarization or compression, but in my case it just died. How do you all handle this? Is there a way besides splitting files up?

Hello, this is the admin speaking. To get to the point, besides splitting files, there are several other ways to reduce context overages. To explain the situation first: Claude Code attempts to auto-compact (automatically summarize previous conversation history) when conversations get long and approach the context limit. However, in cases where files are repeatedly loaded whole, or when large content gets concentrated in one work session, this auto-compression can't keep up, and you get a context limit exceeded error like you mentioned. The exact threshold or detailed compression logic isn't officially disclosed. Here are some methods that might help: 1. Running /compact before hitting the limit lets you clear some space while maintaining context to some degree. 2. Rather than repeatedly reading entire files, pointing out only the parts that need changes (function names, line ranges, etc.) reduces the number of times the same file is fully loaded into context. 3. Refactoring that involves jumping between multiple files is more stable if you break it down by module, commit when each module is done, then continue in a new session. 4. Delegating tangential investigation or searching to subagents is another way to preserve your main conversation's context. It's true that moving to a new session means prior context disappears entirely.
