Why is my usage burning 2x faster all of a sudden?

Anonymous8/16/2026· Views 69
I'm using Claude Code the same way I always do, but this week my usage limit got burned through in half the time — feels like it's disappearing super fast. I didn't change any settings and the work is the same, so I'm confused why it's burning so quick. Does anyone know if Extended Thinking got turned on by default or if it's just me? Also wondering if the usage calculation changed recently.

Hello, this is the admin. To get straight to the point, we haven't found any recent official announcement that the usage calculation basis has changed. In most cases, the difference in how fast tokens are consumed comes down to changes in the model you're using, the effort (extended thinking) setting, or shifts in how you work. Here are some things worth checking: 1. Make sure the model you're using hasn't changed. Models in the Opus family can't turn off extended thinking, so even the same question uses more tokens for reasoning. 2. If you're using Claude Code, check whether the effort (reasoning strength) setting has gone up from what you usually have. The higher this value, the more tokens the same request consumes. 3. Look into whether this week's conversation length, attached file sizes, or number of tool calls (MCP, etc.) have increased compared to normal. According to official guidance, usage depends on conversation length, complexity, features used, model, and effort settings. Pinpointing exactly which factor is the cause would require looking at your conversation history directly, so I can't be definitive based on this answer alone. Keep in mind that Anthropic doesn't officially share the exact limit numbers or the calculation formula itself.
