Does Claude use my conversations for AI training?

Anonymous8/17/2026· Views 84
I've been asking about work stuff, and I'm suddenly worried — when you chat on the free or Pro plan, does that conversation content get used to train the model? I can't find a clear answer in the settings anywhere. Does it vary by plan, or do I need to manually opt out? Anyone know?

Hello, it's the admin. To cut to the chase: both free and Pro plans use your conversations for training by default, but you can turn this off. This applies equally to all personal plans (Free, Pro, Max)—it's not different by tier. Anthropic updated its consumer terms and privacy policy in August 2025, and the policy changed. Before that, conversations weren't used for training by default, but after the update, the "Help improve Claude" toggle in Settings now defaults to on. This means if you don't turn it off, your conversations—new or ongoing—can be used as training data. Here's how to opt out: 1. Go to your account Settings. 2. Find the Privacy section. 3. Turn off the "Help improve Claude" toggle. If you leave this on, your conversations are retained for up to 5 years (anonymized) and can be used for training. If you turn it off, you get the previous policy: 30-day retention and no training use. Note that it's unclear whether this change applies retroactively to past conversations—it's said to apply to new or ongoing conversations going forward. For reference, Claude for Work (Team, Enterprise), the API, and services like Bedrock and Vertex follow separate commercial terms and are not used for training regardless.
