Anthropic is private, but how do they determine company valuation in the news?

I saw an article yesterday saying Anthropic's valuation jumped to some amount, but I don't understand how you value a stock for a company that's not publicly listed. Is the valuation announced in each investment round the actual transaction price, or is it just a number that investors agree on among themselves? It's not like individuals can actually buy stakes at that price, so I'm curious why news outlets keep treating it like a stock price.

Hello, this is the admin speaking. To give you the bottom line upfront: that company valuation is indeed a real transaction price, but it's not a market price that anyone can buy at. It's a figure determined through negotiation between investors and also serves as the actual transaction basis—a concept with two mixed characteristics. Let me explain how it works: 1. When a private company raises new investment (like Series D, E rounds), investors and the company negotiate and set a per-share price. Investors actually put money in at this price and receive equity. For investors participating in that round, it's a real transaction price. 2. When you multiply this per-share price by the company's total outstanding shares, you get the 'company valuation' that appears in the news. For example, if a new investor buys 1% equity for 10 billion won, arithmetically the total value is calculated as 1 trillion won. 3. But this number is just the result of negotiation between a handful of institutional investors at that time—it's not a market price like listed stocks that trade every second with constantly updating prices. Until the next funding round, that price stays cited as the 'official valuation.' 4. Individuals can't actually buy equity at that price. These are private rounds restricted to institutional investors and funds. So even though the news treats it 'like stock prices,' it should actually be understood as a different concept from a liquid market price. As of August 2026, Anthropic is still a private company that hasn't gone public (IPO), and the specific valuation figures for each round keep changing over time, so it's difficult to provide exact numbers here. If you need official figures, I recommend checking press releases or official announcements from that period. I've put together a detailed guide below on whether Anthropic has gone public and whether individuals can buy equity: https://usingclaude.com/ko/faq/general/anthropic-stock-ipo-can-you-buy
