Both Amazon and Google are Anthropic investors — why is that?

Anonymous8/20/2026· Views 76
I saw news that Amazon invested billions into Anthropic, and Google did too, so I'm a bit confused. Aren't those two companies competing in cloud services? How is it possible for both to put money into the same startup? Can someone explain the structure? Is it normal for Anthropic's shareholding to be mixed like this with multiple big tech companies?

Hi, this is the admin. To get straight to the point, it's a normal structure, and Amazon and Google simultaneously investing in Anthropic is indeed something that actually happened. While the two companies are competitors in cloud business, having multiple big tech companies simultaneously invest in an AI startup like this is not an uncommon pattern in the recent AI industry. First, let me clarify the facts: Amazon started investing in Anthropic in 2023 and put in a total of 4 billion dollars, and in April 2026, entered into a contract for additional investment of up to 20 billion dollars, bringing the cumulative investment size to up to 25 billion dollars. Google also started with a maximum 2 billion dollar investment in 2023, but after Amazon's announcement in April 2026, entered into a contract for additional investment of up to 30 billion dollars, making the cumulative maximum scale 40 billion dollars. How is this possible? Both companies hold minority stakes with restricted voting rights, rather than stakes that control the board or influence management. And the investment is bundled with cloud computing usage contracts. Amazon provides AWS and the Trainium chip it developed for Anthropic model training and serving, and Google provides Google Cloud and TPU. In other words, for the two companies, it's closer to a strategic investment to simultaneously secure large customers for their own cloud and chip businesses and gain access to the latest AI models, rather than helping a competitor grow. This structure is not unique to Anthropic alone, and across the AI industry, big tech companies are increasingly simultaneously investing in overlapping startups. However, the exact shareholding ratios or detailed voting rights conditions of each deal are largely undisclosed contracts, so they haven't all been made public. The company structure and ownership relationships of Anthropic are detailed in the guide below. https://usingclaude.com/ko/faq/general/what-is-anthropic-who-owns-it
