What exactly does the Artifact feature do? How's it different from chat?

Anonymous8/21/2026· Views 77
When I ask Claude to write code, sometimes a separate window pops up on the right side and shows the code there—is that the artifact feature? I'm not sure what's different about it compared to just getting a code block in the chat. When does it automatically show up, or is it something I need to turn on manually? Also, how do I save or share the code?

Hello, admin here. Short answer: yeah, that's the separate window on the right, and it works differently from the chat code blocks. Artifacts are for standalone pieces of content like code, documents, webpages, or diagrams—they show up in a separate window apart from the conversation flow. Chat code blocks are just text you scroll through, but an Artifact window can display an actual working screen built in HTML or React, or act as a dedicated workspace where you can keep referencing and editing the content as you go. Let me address what you're asking about one by one. 1. When it appears: This isn't something you turn on—Claude decides to create an artifact automatically. According to the official guidelines, it usually happens when the content is substantial enough (roughly 15+ lines) and is the kind of complete, standalone thing you'd want to save or edit separately from your chat. Short code snippets tend to stay as chat code blocks. If you want one but it doesn't show up, just ask: "Make this an artifact." 2. Settings: You don't need to enable anything—Artifacts are available by default on every plan: Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. 3. Saving: Artifacts stay in that conversation, and if you open the chat again later, you can see all the previous versions you made. 4. Sharing: Hit the Publish button in the Artifact window and you get a public link that works without login (you can keep it view-only or let others remix and make their own version). You can also grab an embed code to paste into other websites. Unpublish it later and the link stops working.
