Does anyone actually use Claude Code Skills?

Anonymous8/24/2026· Views 71
I saw the Skills feature pop up recently and got confused about how it's different from slash commands, so I kind of skipped over it. But looking again, there seem to be quite a few types. The thing is, I can't figure out which ones would actually be helpful. If you're coding and actually use skills regularly, could you tell me which ones and what situations they're useful for?

Hi, this is from the ops team. To get straight to the point: the core difference between skills and slash commands is 'who's calling them,' and in coding work, turning them on to auto-recognize repeated workflows can be really helpful. First, the structural difference. Slash commands are something the user types directly—/command format—to explicitly trigger. Skills (Agent Skills), on the other hand, let you write descriptions and guidelines in a SKILL.md file, and Claude figures out when the current task matches those descriptions and automatically calls the skill without you asking. By the official docs, skills in folders (.claude/skills/name/SKILL.md) can also be manually called with /name, so think of them as slash commands with auto-invoke layered on top. From a practical standpoint, here are situations where keeping them enabled helps: 1. When you have workflows that repeat in the same sequence every time—like PR creation, then testing, then validation—and you don't want to re-explain the process each time. 2. When your team uses internal libraries or specific CLI tools that Claude tends to get wrong or doesn't know well, and you want to document the usage and gotchas upfront. 3. When you frequently generate PDFs, spreadsheets, or documents and want to keep the format consistent across outputs. Anthropc has published an example skills repository (anthropics/skills) with document generation skills and various other examples, but since that repo keeps getting updated, I can't pinpoint the exact full list or installation stats here. I'd recommend installing them yourself and checking if they fit your workflow.
