I keep getting 529 errors in Claude Code and my work keeps getting interrupted

Anonymous9/1/2026· Views 82
When I run Claude Code in the terminal, I keep getting 529 overloaded errors in the middle of my work, and it keeps cutting off. When I retry, I get the same error again after a few minutes. I'm wondering if this is different from errors that show up in the web chat, or if it's specific to the CLI. Other than retrying, are there settings like timeout or backoff that could help? Or is waiting for the server to calm down the only option?

Hi, this is an admin response. To cut to the chase, it's working normally, and the CLI doesn't have a uniquely severe issue. That said, there are some ways to make it feel a bit better. The 529 overloaded error comes from Anthropic's server capacity shortage. Since web chat and CLI (Claude Code) both use the same underlying API, the root cause is identical. With CLI, because you're running longer tasks continuously, you might notice the disconnections more visibly. Here are a few things worth checking. 1. Claude Code already automatically retries up to 10 times with exponential backoff for 529 errors, server errors, and timeouts before response streaming starts. If you see an error on the screen, it means all of these retries have already failed. 2. You can adjust the retry count with the CLAUDE_CODE_MAX_RETRIES environment variable. That said, increasing it doesn't fundamentally make things succeed faster—it just extends the wait time. 3. 529 errors are unrelated to usage limits and don't count against your quota consumption. First, check status.claude.com to see if there are any current outages or capacity issues. 4. Capacity is managed separately per model, so if you keep seeing 529 errors on a specific model, you can also try switching to a different model temporarily and continuing your work. To summarize: timeout and backoff logic is already built in, so there's not much for you to redesign there. Beyond that, the realistic approach is to avoid peak server times or just wait a bit.
