I've already maxed out my Claude usage—any tips to save?

Anonymous9/18/2026· Views 72
Whenever I'm writing code and chatting a few times, I suddenly hit the usage limit and can't use it for hours. I've heard that context compression and starting new conversations help, but I'm wondering if it actually makes a difference. How does everyone manage their usage?

Hi, this is a moderator. To put it simply, the savings you can achieve are very real. First, it helps to understand the structure. Claude's usage limits aren't based on a fixed number of messages. Instead, consumption varies based on the length and complexity of your conversation, the model you're using, and which features are enabled (extended thinking, connected tools, etc.). Separate from the 5-hour session limit, the Max plan also has a weekly limit. The exact consumption formula and specific numbers aren't publicly disclosed. Here are some practical tips: 1. When moving to a new topic, start a new conversation or clear your session. Since all previous messages are sent again with each turn, having unrelated previous conversations pile up consumes more. 2. Upload frequently referenced documents or codebase information to the Knowledge section of your project. Getting caching benefits this way uses less than re-pasting the same content each time. 3. Rather than splitting questions across multiple messages, it's more efficient to include the background, purpose, and relevant code or resources in a single message. This reduces back-and-forth exchanges. 4. Unless it's necessary, turn off extended thinking and any connected tools you're not using. These features consume a lot of tokens. 5. Choose a model that matches the difficulty of your task. Most coding work is fine with the base model—it's better for usage management to only use higher-tier models when you need deeper reasoning.
