What's the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Code? Do I need both?

Hi there, this is the site staff. To answer up front, your understanding is mostly right. The two are for different purposes, you can use Cowork without being a developer, and you don't need to subscribe to both separately. 1. Claude Code: an agent for development work that reads, edits, and runs commands on files in a project folder that contains code. The terminal is the main way to use it, and it also works in IDEs and the desktop app. 2. Cowork: a feature for general work like organizing documents, organizing files, and compiling materials, not coding. Claude handles these tasks file by file. It's designed so you can use it even if you don't know how to use the terminal. If your goal is document organization or file work, Cowork is the better fit. If your goal is writing and fixing code, Claude Code is the better fit. As for pricing and limits, Claude Code is also included in Claude subscriptions like Pro and Max, and as I understand it, usage counts against the same plan's limits. So it's not a separate subscription for each. It's one subscription that covers both. However, Cowork's delivery method, name, and structure have changed since launch, so I can't say for certain which plan it starts on or the exact rules for how usage counts against limits. Please check the current guidance at support.claude.com before you pay. We've put together a detailed guide on the differences between the three tools and how to choose in different situations. https://usingclaude.com/ko/claude-code/compare/claude-vs-claude-code-vs-cowork
