Where is the right place to download Claude Cowork?

Anonymous10/8/2026· Views 18
I searched for Claude Cowork to try it out, and download links are showing up all over the place, so I'm confused. I can't tell if there's a separate app on the official site or if it's a feature built into the Claude desktop app. I'm worried I'll run into trouble if I download it from some sketchy place. Could anyone who knows tell me the official way to get it, and whether it works with a free account?

Hello, this is the admin team. To cut to the chase, Cowork isn't a separate app. It's a feature inside the Claude desktop app, and the official download is just one place: claude.com/download. If you want to use it for file and folder work, you'll need a paid plan. A free account can't do that. 1. Where to get it Install the Claude desktop app for macOS or Windows from the download page on the official site, claude.com. As far as we can tell, there's no separate program to install for Cowork. It's safer not to click separate installer links from blogs or ads. 2. Recent changes As far as I've confirmed, since mid-September 2026 Cowork has been merging into regular conversations instead of living on its own tab. It's rolling out account by account, so the screens may differ from older posts. Some accounts may still see the old chat/collaboration selection screen. 3. Can I use it on a free account? Tasks that work with files and folders on your computer, and cloud tasks, are offered on the Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. The guidance says Free isn't included. There is a release note, however, saying that creating design, slide, and document artifacts is available on all plans, including Free. Plan details can change, so please double-check the latest info on the official help center (support.claude.com) before you pay. 4. Notes Computer tasks only run while the desktop app is open. There's also a note that the first launch downloads a fairly large set of components, but the exact size varies between sources, so I'm not certain of it. I've put together a detailed guide on installing the desktop app here: https://usingclaude.com/ko/guides/start/claude-download-install For how to use Cowork after the merge, see this post: https://usingclaude.com/ko/guides/features/claude-cowork-guide
