I have Claude Pro but I keep hitting usage limits. Is there a way around it?

I'm paying for Claude Pro, but whenever I work for a while, I get "You've reached your usage limit" and have to wait hours. I mostly use it for code reviews and summarizing long documents. Is it normal to hit the limit this often even with a paid plan? Do you have any tips for reducing usage?

Hello, this is the admin here. Let me cut to the chase: it's working as intended, and there are definitely ways to reduce consumption. First, it helps to understand the structure. Claude's usage limit isn't a fixed number of messages—it operates on a sliding scale based on how much computation your conversation uses (Anthropic doesn't publicly disclose exact figures). Pro resets roughly every 5 hours. The key insight: "the longer your conversation, the more each reply costs." Claude re-reads your entire conversation history every time it answers, so your 100th message burns way more than your 1st. Here are three practical strategies: 1. Start a new conversation when your topic shifts. Several short conversations are far more efficient than one long one. 2. Don't keep attaching big files repeatedly—upload shared reference material to your project instead. 3. For heavy work like code reviews, batch it right after your limit resets. Usage structure and plan differences are laid out in detail in this guide: https://usingclaude.com/ko/pricing/plans/claude-usage-limits-guide If that's still not enough, Max (5× or 20× more usage) is your next option.
