Has anyone connected the Google Drive connector for Claude?

Anonymous7/4/2026· Views 145
I saw Google Drive and Gmail in the connector list, but I'm not sure how to actually use them once I connect. Does Claude just read the file contents and answer based on them, or can you also create and edit files? If anyone's tried this, I'd love to hear how you're using it. Thanks!

Hi, this is a moderator. Let me give you the summary first: the Google Drive connector is basically a read-focused feature right now. Here's how it works according to Claude.ai's official help center. 1. What can you do? When you connect Google Drive, Claude can read Google Docs and use them in your conversation. You paste a URL or pick from recent files to add them as project knowledge. The docs stay synced with your originals, so you're always seeing the latest version. It's great for summarizing, analyzing, asking questions about document content, and drafting based on what's in them. 2. What can't you do? Per the official docs, Claude can only read plain text in the document body — it can't see images, comments, or suggested edits. The Drive connector right now only works when you add files to a private project; it's disabled for shared projects. Write operations like editing or deleting files aren't supported by the base connector. Converting xlsx to Google Sheets or pptx to Slides also isn't available. 3. Which plans get this? Official docs say Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise, an admin has to turn on the connector first — then individual users can log in. 4. What about security? When you use the connector, the data lands on Anthropic servers. If you delete the chat, it's deleted too. Per the official guidance, data you import via the Google Drive connector isn't used to train the model. 5. Real-world tips Right now the connector works best for reading and analyzing info. You can add multiple docs at once and cross-analyze them — just make sure the total adds up to less than your context window. If you need fancier workflows like auto-generating or editing files, you'll want to hook up something like Zapier or n8n. The connector is still in beta, so there's room for expansion down the line.
