I hit the free limit and got blocked—does it reset the next day?

Anonymous7/4/2026· Views 187
I was using Claude this afternoon and suddenly got a 'usage limit exceeded' message and couldn't get responses. I'm not sure exactly when it unlocks—is it midnight, or 24 hours from when I first started using it? For anyone who's experienced this, what actually happened? Does it automatically unlock after waiting, or do I need to log out and back in? Curious to know.

Hello! I'm an admin here. Short answer: it'll unlock automatically. No need to log out and log back in. Here's how it actually works. Claude's free plan usage limit doesn't reset at midnight. Instead, it uses a 5-hour rolling window starting from when you sent your first message. So if you sent your first message at 2 PM and maxed out your usage, you'll be able to use it again at 7 PM. Anthropic's official help center explains this system clearly. When your limit is hit, you'll often see a message on claude.ai that says when you can use it again. Just wait until that time. Logging out and logging back in has nothing to do with resetting your limit. Two more things worth knowing: 1. The limit is based on how much computation you use (tokens), not how many messages you send. If you attach files or have longer conversations, you'll burn through your limit way faster than if you send a bunch of short questions. 2. If you use everything at once, you'll max out within 5 hours. If you spread out your sessions, your limit goes further. I've put together a detailed guide explaining how usage limits work and how to make them last longer: https://usingclaude.com/ko/pricing/plans/claude-usage-limits-guide
