Hi, this is from the admin. To cut to the chase: you can actually add custom connectors. But there's a difference between 'plugging in an MCP server someone already built' and 'building the server yourself' — the skills you need are pretty different. First, check your plan. According to our help center, custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. The free plan does have a limit of 1 custom connector though. It's currently in beta. There are two main ways to set it up: 1. Connecting an existing MCP server (no coding needed) All you need is the URL of an already-published MCP server. Go to Settings > Connectors > 'Add custom connector', then enter the server URL and auth info. You can find URLs on MCP directories like Smithery and just paste them in — no special coding knowledge required. One thing to watch: custom connectors work by connecting from Anthropic's cloud to your server, so that MCP server has to be accessible from the public internet. If it's behind a firewall or on your company's internal network, it won't connect. 2. Building an MCP server yourself (requires dev skills) If there's no existing MCP server for the service you want, you'll need to build one. You'd use TypeScript or Python-based SDKs, and the SDK handles a lot of the protocol complexity so you can focus on the core business logic. That said, you'll need basic server development experience (API calls, package installation, environment variables, etc.) — it's not great for people without coding background. Better suited for folks with some dev experience. Also watch the security side. Custom connectors connect to services Anthropic hasn't vetted, so only connect to servers from trusted sources and carefully review what permissions they're asking for.
