Can I install Claude as a separate desktop app?

Anonymous7/6/2026· Views 349
I've been using it only through the browser so far, but I heard there's a separate app you can install. I've looked around the official site and can't really see a download button or anything. Does a desktop app actually exist, and if so, where do I get it? Asking for Windows specifically.

Hello, this is the admin speaking. To cut to the chase: yes, the official Windows desktop app really exists and you can download it for free. Here's where to get it: claude.com/download On this page, click the Windows button to download the installer. After installation, launch the app from your Start menu and log in with your existing claude.ai account. Your conversations, projects, and settings will sync with the web version. System requirements: Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit (x64). 32-bit is not supported. The app itself is free to use across all plans, including the free plan. However, some features within the app vary by plan. 1. Basic chat is available on all plans, including free. 2. Cowork (agent features for handling files and complex multi-step tasks) is exclusive to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise paid plans. 3. Claude Code (the coding agent tab) is also available only on paid plans. The biggest difference from the web version is that the desktop app lets you install and connect desktop extensions (MCP-based) to access local files and apps directly. You can't do this in the browser.
