Has anyone compared Claude to ChatGPT for summarizing long documents?

Anonymous7/8/2026· Views 135
I'm looking to use AI at work to summarize long documents like reports and contracts. I've heard Claude has a larger context window, but does it actually feel different compared to ChatGPT when you're processing long documents? I'd like to hear from people who've actually used it — is there a noticeable difference in summary quality or how often it misses important details?

Hello, this is the admin. To cut to the chase, if you're dealing with long documents like reports or contracts, Claude shows clear advantages in real-world experience. The biggest difference is the context window size. On consumer plans, Claude has 200K tokens while ChatGPT (GPT series) has 128K tokens, so Claude can process more content at once. If you simply convert 200K tokens based on Korean standards, it's roughly the level where you can put a document of around 100 pages into it at once (the exact conversion varies depending on the document composition). The actual quality differences in summarization are organized into the following three points. 1. Processing entire document at once: Since Claude reads large documents all at once without dividing them, if a concept that appears on page 12 of a 47-page contract affects subsequent clauses, it maintains that connection in the summary. ChatGPT requires chunking (dividing) work when documents are long, and in this process, connections between sections are broken or content from earlier parts is lost. 2. Whether important content is omitted: Independent real-world comparison tests show that Claude tends to produce more complete and accurate results when summarizing documents over 10 pages. Particularly in documents like legal contracts where the argument and counter-argument structure is complex, Claude's ability to track logical flow is mentioned as a strength. 3. Cases where ChatGPT is better: If the document is short (5 pages or less, etc.), the results from both tools are almost identical. Also, if you need to combine document summarization with real-time web information, ChatGPT's Deep Research feature might be more advantageous. One more thing to note for company work is the data policy when handling corporate confidential documents. By default, Claude does not use conversation content for training, and applies more conservative personal information handling policies without additional settings. It's good to review this part when dealing with sensitive documents like contracts.
