Do I get charged as soon as I create a Claude API key?

Anonymous7/9/2026· Views 133
I'm wondering if money comes out even if I just create an API key without using it. I haven't actually sent any requests yet, but I'm not sure if just creating the key itself charges me anything, or if I only pay for what I actually call. I'm also curious if there's any free credit given at the beginning.

Hello, this is the operator. To get straight to the point, creating an API key itself doesn't incur costs. You only get charged for the actual API calls you make. Here's a simple breakdown of the billing structure. 1. No cost for key creation: The act of creating an account and issuing an API key doesn't incur any charges. If you create a key and don't send any requests, you won't pay anything. 2. Pay only for what you use: The Claude API operates on a prepaid credit model. You charge credits and the balance is deducted based on API call volume (token count). There are no monthly subscription fees. 3. Initial test credits: It's confirmed through multiple sources that new API accounts automatically receive a small credit for testing initially. However, Anthropic doesn't precisely specify this amount in official documentation, and whether it's provided and its size may vary depending on account conditions. Once this credit is used up, you need to charge directly to make additional calls. 4. Claude.ai subscription (Pro/Max) and API are separate: Even if you're subscribed to Pro or Max plans on the claude.ai web, API usage fees are billed separately. The two products are completely separate billing systems. Additionally, I'll mention two things to keep in mind. 1. After charging credits, if you accidentally send many API requests or run test scripts for extended periods, your balance can be depleted quickly. In the Plans & Billing menu of console.anthropic.com, you can set a monthly spending limit to prevent unexpected charges. 2. Manage your API key carefully so it's not exposed externally. If your key is leaked, others can use it to send calls and deplete your credits.
