Does anyone know what Sam McCandlish's exact role is at Anthropic?

I've seen the name Sam McCandlish pop up often in Claude-related materials and technical documents, but I'm not sure what his exact position is at Anthropic. I'm also not sure if he's on the research side or the engineering side. If anyone knows whether he's directly involved in Claude development or if he works on a separate research project, please let me know.

Hello, this is the operator. Sam McCandlish is a co-founder of Anthropic, and his current title is Chief Architect. Let me start with some background. McCandlish earned a PhD in theoretical physics from Stanford and worked as a researcher at OpenAI before co-founding Anthropic in 2021 with Dario and Daniela Amodei and five other former OpenAI employees. In other words, he's one of the people who founded the company that created Claude from the beginning. Looking at his title progression, it's as follows: 1. Early founding period: Chief Scientist 2. Middle period: Chief Technology Officer (CTO) 3. After leadership restructuring in October 2025: Chief Architect As the current Chief Architect, he's reportedly focusing on pre-training and large-scale model training. However, this title change hasn't yet been explicitly confirmed on Anthropic's official homepage and is based on third-party sources, so his exact current title may be somewhat fluid. The reason he frequently appears in papers is clear too. McCandlish is one of the key co-authors of research on AI scaling laws. This research, which formed the basis for pre-predicting GPT-3 performance, has influenced large language model development broadly and directly led to Claude development. Therefore, it's natural that his name appears frequently in technical documents and papers. In summary, he's not a pure researcher or a general engineer — he's one of the company's top technical leaders and co-founder, deeply involved in both research and large-scale training infrastructure.
