I'm on Pro but what exactly triggers usage limits?

Anonymous7/13/2026· Views 124
I subscribed to Pro this month and I'm using it, but a few days ago I got a message saying I hit a usage limit. I didn't think I had that many conversations, so I'm not sure why it filled up so fast. It's not clear whether it's counted by message count or token volume, or how often the limit resets. Does anyone know? Honestly it feels like I hit it as soon as I have a slightly longer conversation, so I'm wondering if paying was even worth it.

Hello everyone, this is the admin. Quick answer: it's working normally, and that feeling that your limit drains faster as conversations get longer? There's actually real basis for that. First, let me explain the baseline. Claude's usage limits aren't counted like 'ten messages'—a fixed number. Instead, they're based on computational cost, which varies depending on conversation length and complexity, which model you're using, which features are enabled, and which reasoning effort level you pick. So one long conversation can use way more than ten short questions. Anthropic doesn't publicly release the exact formula or numbers, though. Resets happen on two timescales: (1) Session-level usage resets every 5 hours. (2) Pro plan users also have a separate weekly limit that resets at a set time on your account. You can find your exact next reset time in Settings → Usage. Here's how to reduce usage: 1. When your topic changes, start a fresh conversation instead of continuing the old one. Previous messages get sent with every turn, so longer conversations drain faster. 2. For material you'll reference repeatedly, upload it to your Projects' knowledge section. It gets cached, so reuse costs less. 3. Use Sonnet for everyday work and save Opus or high reasoning effort for the really complex stuff.
