I made a design skill for Claude Code, but is it actually being applied?

Anonymous7/14/2026· Views 137
I put together design guidelines in the skills folder and added it, but the output looks pretty much the same as before I added the skill, so I'm confused. Is there a way to check if the skill actually loaded? I can't tell if it auto-detects just because the file exists, or if I need to explicitly call it in the conversation. Has anyone tried this?

Hello, this is the operator. To cut to the chase, just putting files in the skills folder doesn't mean your results automatically reflect them each time. Claude Code reads the description field in SKILL.md and only loads and applies that skill's content when it judges the current request is relevant to it. If the file exists, it shows up in the skill list when the session starts, but whether it's actually applied depends on the description matching. If your output looked similar to before adding the skill, the most common reason is that the description is written vaguely. The description needs to clearly spell out what this skill does and when to use it at the start so matching works well. If you didn't write a description at all, the first paragraph of SKILL.md is used instead, which can make the trigger condition ambiguous. There are two ways to check. 1. Open a new conversation and naturally ask a request that perfectly matches your description, then verify whether the skill content actually gets applied. 2. Separately from automatic recognition, you can call it directly using a slash command. The skill folder name becomes the command, so if your folder is named design-guideline, typing /design-guideline in the chat will load its contents unconditionally. If the output is clearly different this way, then the skill itself is fine, and you've narrowed the problem down to automatic triggering. Note that if you created a new skills directory after the session started, you need to restart for it to be recognized. If you just edited the SKILL.md content inside an existing folder, it applies immediately without restarting.
