Do I need to create a separate console account to get a Claude API key?

Anonymous7/15/2026· Views 151
I've been using Claude through the app and web, but I'm trying to use the API for the first time now. I went to console.anthropic.com and got a login screen. I'm confused whether it's the same account I use for Claude.ai or if I need to create a new account just for the console. And once I sign up, do I get a key right away, or is there an approval process I need to wait for? I'm also wondering if I should sign up with a company email.

Hello, this is the operator. To cut to the chase, your Claude.ai account and console (API) account are separate, and you do need to sign up separately. First, it helps to understand the structure. claude.ai is the general chat service, while console.anthropic.com (also referred to as platform.claude.com nowadays) is a separate platform where developers get API keys and manage usage and billing. You can log in with the same email or Google account, but internally they're treated as separate accounts/workspaces, and subscription billing and API billing happen separately. In other words, even if you have a Pro or Max subscription, you need to charge API credits separately. Here's the signup process: 1. Sign up for the console with an email or Google account and complete email verification. 2. Enter basic profile and use-case information. 3. In Settings > Billing, register a payment method (card) and charge a minimum amount of credits — this is when your API key will actually work. Before registering a card, you can browse the console, but API calls may be blocked even if you've generated a key. 4. After that, you can generate keys directly from the API Keys menu in Settings. As for approval or review procedures: once a payment method is properly registered, keys are usually issued immediately, and there's no official mention of a separate waiting-period review stage. However, there are reports that additional verification may be required depending on region or account status, so this can vary from user to user and isn't officially documented clearly. There's no restriction requiring a company email — you can sign up and pay with a personal email too. Details about API key issuance, billing, and initial setup are laid out in the guide below. https://usingclaude.com/ko/api/start/claude-api-key-billing-guide
