I hit my Claude usage limit—when exactly does it reset?

Anonymous7/15/2026· Views 116
My usage capped out last night and I haven't been able to use it since. I thought it resets every 5 hours, but the limit is still active even after time has passed. I'm confused whether the reset timer counts from when I send my first message, or if it resets at a set time. I also saw something about the app and web having different reset times—is that right?

Hi, this is the moderator. So here's the thing: the 5-hour limit doesn't reset at a fixed time each day. Instead, it uses a rolling window—5 hours from the moment you send your first message. For example, if you sent your first message at 7 p.m., your usage limit from that time slot starts rolling back around midnight, and your available capacity gradually comes back in that order. But if you've been waiting for a while and things are still locked, there's another possibility: you might have hit the weekly usage limit, which is separate from the 5-hour short-term limit. Claude runs both a 5-hour rolling limit and a weekly limit independently, and they reset at different times. Even if your 5-hour limit clears, if you've maxed out your weekly allowance, you'll still look like you're capped. About the idea that the app and web have different reset times—according to official documentation, it's actually the opposite. Your usage across claude.ai web, desktop apps, mobile apps, Claude Code, and other access paths all draw from the same pool. So whether you use the app or the web, you're sharing the same limit. I haven't found anything saying each has its own separate reset time. That said, not all edge cases are fully documented, so I can't say with 100% certainty. If you're using Claude Code, you can type `/usage` in the terminal to see your exact remaining 5-hour and weekly limits, plus the exact time they'll reset. On the web or in the app, the interface is more limited—usually you just get a warning message.
