Does Claude sometimes skip sentences when translating, or is it just me?

Hi, this is the moderator. Here's the short version: it's not just your account—missing or condensed paragraphs when translating longer documents is a real and common issue. And besides splitting the text up, there are some other tricks worth trying. However, the precise internal reason why certain paragraphs get summarized or left out isn't something Anthropic has officially explained, so I can't say for certain. My best guess is that the model, while trying to produce a natural translation, rearranges sentences in a way that loses the one-to-one correspondence with the original text. Here are some practical strategies that actually help: 1. Number the paragraphs in your source text and ask the model to include the same numbers in the translation. When numbers are there, the model feels constrained to fill every item completely—missing parts become much less likely. 2. Try asking for output in table format. Put the original paragraphs in the left column and the translation in the right, side by side. If anything's missing, you'll spot it right away—either as a blank cell or a misaligned row—and proofreading becomes way faster. 3. Add an explicit instruction at the very start and very end of your prompt: "Translate every single sentence with no summaries, cuts, or paraphrasing." Splitting the instruction across different positions keeps it from getting buried in the middle. 4. If you're doing this repeatedly, save these rules in your Projects feature under instructions. Then you don't have to rewrite the prompt each time. 5. If certain paragraphs keep getting skipped anyway, the most reliable workaround right now is to request a fresh translation of just that paragraph and patch it in.
