When adopting Claude at a company, the first thing security and compliance teams check is "what security certifications does this service hold?" This article summarizes the certifications Anthropic officially maintains, what each one guarantees, and the commonly misunderstood question of "how far the certification actually reaches."

To start with the conclusion: Anthropic officially maintains the following certifications and compliance credentials (re-checked September 9, 2026 via Anthropic's official Help Center).
Certifications Anthropic holds
According to Anthropic's official materials (support.claude.com, privacy.claude.com), it maintains the following compliance credentials:
- SOC 2 Type I & Type II — audit of a service organization's security controls
- ISO 27001:2022 — Information Security Management System (ISMS) standard
- ISO/IEC 42001:2023 — AI Management System international standard
- HIPAA-ready configuration (BAA available) — US health data compliance
SOC 2 (Type I·II)
SOC 2 (Service Organization Control 2) is a framework created by the AICPA (American Institute of CPAs) that audits whether a service organization's controls over customer data (security, availability, etc.) are appropriate. Type I evaluates the design of controls at a point in time, while Type II evaluates whether those controls operated effectively over a period. In other words, Type II is the more rigorous verification.
ISO 27001:2022
ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for an Information Security Management System (ISMS). The trailing 2022 indicates the revision year. It certifies that an organization has a systematic management framework for protecting information assets — widely required by European and global enterprises.
ISO/IEC 42001:2023
ISO/IEC 42001, established in 2023, is the international standard for an AI Management System. It addresses whether an organization that develops and operates AI has a responsible management framework in place. As an AI-specific standard, holding it is a relatively recent trust signal for an AI company.
HIPAA-ready configuration (BAA available)
HIPAA (the US health data protection law) governs how Protected Health Information (PHI) is handled. Anthropic offers a HIPAA-ready configuration, and using it requires signing a BAA (Business Associate Agreement). Per official guidance, the BAA covers "HIPAA-ready services" such as the first-party API or Enterprise plans.
Important — how far the certification reaches
These certifications cover Anthropic's own infrastructure and internal controls. They do not automatically cover how you (the customer) deploy and use Claude. For example, if your company must comply with SOC 2, it is not "Claude has SOC 2, so we're automatically compliant" — you still need your own access controls, audit logs, and vendor risk assessment. The certification handles "Anthropic's side of the boundary"; your side remains your responsibility.
Commercial vs. consumer products
The official documentation states these certifications apply to commercial products (Claude for Work, the Anthropic API, etc.). Consumer products (Free, Pro, Max) — and using Claude Code from those accounts — are covered separately. Because scope can differ by plan and product, verify against your contract and the official Trust materials when you actually adopt Claude.
How data is handled
Officially, Anthropic does not use data submitted under its commercial terms to train models by default. Some APIs also offer a ZDR (Zero Data Retention) option so that data is not stored after the response is returned (enabled per organization via the sales team).
※ Details such as retention periods and exceptions can vary by product, contract, and time, so this article does not assert specific figures. For exact values, rely on Anthropic's official Trust and Privacy documentation.
How to obtain the certification documents
Anthropic provides certification and compliance documents through its Trust Portal (trust.anthropic.com). Sensitive documents like the detailed SOC 2 Type II report are provided under an NDA. When evaluating adoption, request the latest documents through your account team or the Trust Portal.
Note for Korean enterprises
Regarding Korea's domestic information-protection certifications such as ISMS / ISMS-P, there is no confirmed mention in Anthropic's official materials (no official source). Organizations that require domestic certification should use the international certifications above (SOC 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001) as supporting evidence, and judge domestic-regulation compliance through their own compliance and legal review. Since this cannot be officially confirmed, it is left as an "accuracy not guaranteed" area.
Summary
- Anthropic certifications: SOC 2 Type I·II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 42001:2023, HIPAA-ready (BAA)
- Scope covers Anthropic's infrastructure — your deployment needs its own controls
- Applies mainly to commercial products (Work, API); consumer products are separate
- Request documents via the Trust Portal (trust.anthropic.com)
- Korea's domestic certifications (ISMS, etc.) are not officially mentioned → self-review required
