If you find Claude's interface too bright for long reading sessions, or if the default font feels hard to follow, you're in luck: Claude lets you change both the color mode (light, dark, or system-synced) and the chat font (including a dyslexic-friendly option) right from its settings panel. This guide walks you through every step, with no technical knowledge required.

Before You Start
This guide is written for the web version of Claude at claude.ai, accessed through a browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. You need to be logged in to a Claude account — a free account works just as well as a paid one for appearance settings. If you are using a mobile app, the settings layout may look different; using a browser is the safest path to follow along here.
Quick Glossary
- Appearance — the section in Settings where you control how Claude looks: colors and fonts.
- Color mode — whether the screen uses a bright background (Light), a dark background (Dark), or follows your device automatically (Match System).
- Match System — Claude reads your operating system's (OS — the software that runs your computer or phone, such as Windows, macOS, or Android) current theme and matches it automatically.
- Chat font — the typeface (visual style of the letters) used inside your conversation window.
- Dyslexic Friendly — a font designed to make individual letters easier to tell apart, which can reduce reading fatigue for anyone, not just those with dyslexia.
Switching Between Light Mode and Dark Mode
According to the official Claude Help Center, here is how to change your color mode step by step.
- Open your browser and go to claude.ai. Make sure you are logged in.
- Look at the bottom-left corner of the screen. You will see your initials or name displayed there — for example, "JD" for Jane Doe. Click on it.
- A small menu appears. Click Settings.
- Inside Settings, click the Appearance tab.
- Under Color mode, you will see three options:
- Light — white background, bright interface
- Match System — automatically follows your device's dark/light setting
- Dark — dark background, easier on the eyes in low-light environments
- Click whichever option you want. The change takes effect immediately — no need to refresh the page.
How to confirm it worked: The background color of your chat window should shift the moment you click. Choosing Dark turns the background to a deep color; choosing Light brings it back to white. If the color changes, you're all set.
⚠️ Watch out: If you choose Match System and nothing seems to change, check your device's own dark mode setting first. Claude simply mirrors what your OS reports — so if your computer is set to Light mode, Claude will stay light even after you pick Match System.
Changing the Chat Font
The chat font setting lives on the same Appearance screen as the color mode. According to the official Help Center, here is how to change it.
- Follow the same path as above: click your initials → Settings → Appearance.
- Scroll down slightly to find the Chat font section, located just below Color mode.
- Choose from the three options:
- Default — Claude's standard font
- Match System — inherits your device's default font
- Dyslexic Friendly — a specially designed font that makes letters like "b", "d", "p", and "q" easier to distinguish from one another
- Click your choice and it applies straight away.
How to confirm it worked: Look at any text in the chat window — both your messages and Claude's replies. The letters should visibly change shape. The Dyslexic Friendly font is the easiest to spot: similar-looking letters will appear more distinct, which is especially noticeable in English text.
Can I Hide the Sidebar Completely?
The sidebar — the vertical panel on the left side of the screen that lists your past conversations — cannot be fully disabled, according to the official Help Center. However, you can collapse it (hide it from view) by clicking the button at the top right of the sidebar. Clicking it again will bring the sidebar back. A complete removal option is not currently available.
What to Do If Settings Don't Stick
Occasionally you may notice that your appearance preferences seem to reset after reopening the browser. Here are the most common reasons and what to do.
- Check that you're logged in: Appearance settings are tied to your account. If you were logged out, log back in and reapply your preferred settings.
- Browser cookies were cleared: Cookies — small files a website uses to remember your preferences — may have been deleted by your browser or a cleanup tool. Simply go back to Settings > Appearance and set your preferences again.
- Using multiple devices: Your settings may not sync perfectly across all your devices. It takes only a moment to set them on each device you use regularly.
What to Explore Next
