Claude for Word is the official add-in that brings Claude into Microsoft Word. It reads your document and answers with clickable section citations, edits only the selected text while preserving surrounding styles and numbering, and lands every edit as a tracked change you can accept or reject. It is built for professionals who work heavily with documents — legal review, financial memo drafting, and iterative editing. This guide covers plan requirements, features, installation, guardrails, and limits, based on the official Anthropic help docs. (As of June 2026.)
What it can do
Claude for Word is in beta and available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Key capabilities:
- Cited answers: Ask about a clause or defined term and get answers with clickable citations that jump to the referenced section.
- Edit selection: Claude edits only the selection while preserving surrounding styles, numbering, and formatting; new text inherits the nearby paragraph style.
- Tracked changes: In suggested-edit mode, edits land as tracked revisions you accept or reject individually in Word's native review pane.
- Comment threads: Claude understands what each comment is anchored to, edits that passage, and replies explaining what it changed.
- Counterparty redlines: Claude reads a returned tracked-change document and summarizes what changed, grouped by severity.
- Fill templates: Drafts in your document's heading and paragraph styles; tables populate in place without reflowing layout.
- Semantic navigation: Finds every provision touching a theme — not just keyword hits — with click-to-navigate results.
Edit safely with tracked changes
When you enter suggested-edit mode, Claude's edits land as tracked revisions. The original text shows as a deletion and the new text as an insertion, all reviewable in Word's native review pane. This gives a clear audit trail so you can accept or reject each revision. You can always undo with Word's standard undo (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z).
Supported versions and install
Supported: Word on the web, Word on Windows (Microsoft 365 subscription, Version 2205 / Build 15202.10000 or later), Word on Mac (16.61 / Build 22040100 or later).
Unsupported: Word 2016/2019 (perpetual/volume), Word on iPad, Word on Android, and Microsoft 365 builds older than the above. File support is .docx only; save legacy .doc as .docx first.
Individual install: ① open the Claude for Word listing on Microsoft Marketplace → ② click "Get it now" → ③ open Word and activate the add-in → ④ sign in with your Claude account. Admins deploy via Microsoft 365 Admin Center (Integrated apps) or upload the provided manifest XML.
Note: If your organization routes traffic through an internal LLM gateway (Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Azure), you can use the add-in without a Claude account — the same pattern as Claude Code.
Limits and safety
As a beta feature, Claude for Word is not recommended for: final client deliverables or counterparty sends without human review, litigation filings or audit-critical documents without verification, replacing legal or financial judgment, or highly sensitive/privileged data without proper controls. Inputs and outputs are auto-deleted on the backend within 30 days (cached for a few hours so you can access recently closed documents).
Prompt injection risk: Do not use it with untrusted external documents (downloaded templates, counterparty files, email-shared docs). Hidden malicious instructions in body text, comments, tracked changes, headers, or footers can trick Claude into treating them as legitimate requests. See the related browser-agent security design in the Claude in Chrome guide.
Per the official FAQ, you can switch between Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, and Sonnet 4.6 in Claude for Word. (Model lineup may change.)
