On Claude, you can rename or delete any conversation from the conversation list on web, iOS, or Android. This guide walks through the exact steps for each platform and what actually happens after you delete a chat, based on official support documentation. It takes about 5 minutes even the first time.

Before you start
No installation or setup needed — you can do this right away.
- Be logged into your Claude account (claude.ai on web, the Claude app on mobile)
- The conversation you want to rename or delete must already exist in your list
- Deletion cannot be undone, so double-check you have the right conversation before confirming
Quick terms
- Sidebar — the panel on the left side of the screen that lists your conversations.
- Kebab menu (⋮) — an icon of three dots that, when tapped or clicked, opens extra options like renaming or deleting.
- Backend — the internal servers and storage systems that run behind the scenes, not visible on your screen.
Delete or rename a single conversation on web
On web, click the ⋮ button next to a conversation in the sidebar and choose Rename or Delete.
- Go to claude.ai and log in.
- Find the conversation you want to rename or delete in the left sidebar.
- Hover over the conversation and click the ⋮ button that appears.
- Choose Rename to rename it, or Delete to delete it.
- If you chose Delete, click Delete again in the confirmation prompt to finish.
Success looks like this: the conversation disappears from the sidebar immediately (delete), or shows the new name you entered (rename).
Delete multiple conversations at once on web
To delete several conversations at once, use the Select feature from the "Chats and tasks" menu in the sidebar.
- Click "Chats and tasks" in the left sidebar.
- Click the ⋮ button above the conversation list.
- Click Select.
- Click the checkbox next to each conversation you want to delete, or use Select all at the top.
- Click Delete, then confirm again in the prompt.
Success looks like this: all the conversations you selected disappear from the list at once.
Delete or rename a conversation on iOS
On iOS, press and hold a conversation to open a menu for renaming or deleting it.
- In the chat list, touch and hold a conversation to bring up the menu. Tap Rename or Delete. If deleting, tap Delete again in the confirmation prompt.
- Alternatively, open the conversation and use the ⋯ menu, then select Delete.
Delete or rename a conversation on Android
On Android, use the ⋮ button in the top right for a single conversation, or the checklist icon to manage several at once.
Delete or rename a single conversation
- Open the conversation and tap the ⋮ menu in the top right of the screen.
- Tap Rename or Delete.
- If deleting, tap Delete again in the confirmation prompt.
Delete multiple conversations at once
- Tap the checklist icon in the top right of the chat list.
- Tap the checkbox next to each conversation you want to delete.
- Tap the trash icon, then confirm by tapping Delete in the prompt.
The menu location differs by platform
Renaming and deleting work the same way conceptually across web, iOS, and Android, but where you find the menu differs.
| Platform | How to open the menu | Bulk delete |
|---|---|---|
| Web | Hover over a conversation, click ⋮ | Yes (Chats and tasks → Select) |
| iOS | Touch and hold (or ⋯ menu inside a chat) | Not documented |
| Android | Tap ⋮ in the top right | Yes (checklist icon → checkboxes) |
Common sticking points and things to watch for
The two spots people get stuck on are the confirmation prompt and what happens after deletion.
Caution: Clicking or tapping Delete does not delete the conversation immediately — you must confirm again by tapping Delete in the prompt that follows. If a conversation is still in your list after your first tap, check whether you missed the confirmation step.
One more thing worth knowing: a deleted conversation disappears from your conversation list right away, but it can take up to 30 days for it to be fully removed from Claude's internal storage systems (the backend). This doesn't mean it will reappear or can be recovered — deletion is still permanent from your side.
Frequently asked questions
Q. Can I recover a conversation after deleting it?
Official documentation does not describe a recovery process. Deletion is permanent, so confirm carefully before clicking Delete a second time.
Q. Can I delete multiple conversations at once?
Yes. On web, use Select from the "Chats and tasks" menu in the sidebar to pick several conversations and delete them together. On Android, use the checklist icon to select and delete multiple conversations at once.
Q. Are rename and delete in the same menu?
Yes. On web and Android, opening the ⋮ button shows both Rename and Delete. On iOS, touch and hold (or the ⋯ menu inside a chat) shows both options together.
Q. I tapped Delete but the conversation is still there.
You need to confirm by tapping Delete again in the prompt that appears — the first tap alone doesn't delete it. Check whether the confirmation prompt appeared and was dismissed.
Next steps
Once your conversation list is tidy, it's also worth looking into sharing a conversation with someone else, using incognito chats that don't save to your history, and searching or building on past conversations — all part of managing your Claude chats.
