Anthropic's official account @claudeai announced the following on X (formerly Twitter) on September 16, 2026: "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. Ask a quick question or hand over a report, and Claude takes it from there, even after you close your laptop. If something's unclear, Claude asks—you keep the final say. Rolling out to Pro and Max over the next few weeks."
What Was Announced
According to Anthropic's official blog, Claude Cowork — previously a separate product for handling bigger, cross-session work such as file tasks and scheduled jobs — and regular chat are merging into a single conversation experience. Previously, users had to choose between "chat" and "Cowork" before starting a task, but in the new experience that distinction disappears, and Claude decides what tools a task needs based on the conversation itself.
Alongside this, new output capabilities were also announced. Claude Docs, a document-writing tool, and Claude Slides, a presentation tool, launched today, and Claude Design — previously used in its own separate space — now also works directly inside conversations. All three are in beta on paid plans, and results can be edited directly in the conversation or downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF.
What It Means for Users
With this merger, users no longer need to decide in advance whether a task belongs in chat or in Cowork. As in the example from the official announcement, a weekly report due at noon can be requested in the morning, and Claude keeps working in the cloud even after the laptop is closed, with progress checkable from a phone while on the move. If something is unclear, Claude asks first, and the user still has final say over whether to allow each action.
Existing Cowork users carry over their chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills into the new experience, while users who mostly use chat don't need to do anything differently — they can simply hand over a bigger task whenever they want to.

Requirements
- Eligible plans — Rolling out first to Pro and Max plans, with Team and Free plans to follow.
- Eligible platforms — Available in the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile.
- Eligible users — Rolling out gradually to both existing and new users, so accounts on the same plan may see the change at different times.
Setup and Usage
- No setup needed — There's nothing to turn on; if your message box still shows separate "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you haven't received the new experience yet.
- Permission setting — In the message box, "Manual" (default) has Claude ask before each action, while "Auto" lets Claude keep working with automated safety checks and fewer check-ins; you can change this at any time.
- Connectors — Apps connected under Customize > Connectors, such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365, or Slack, can be used while Claude works.
- Scheduled tasks — Recurring work, like a weekly report every Monday, can be scheduled to run in the cloud even when your computer is off.
Who Uses It, and For What
- Professionals handling deadline-driven work like reports, presentations, and spreadsheets can use it for tasks such as pulling themes from interview notes, writing pipeline status reports, or drafting research comparisons.
- As in the Senior Economist example from the official material, it can also be used for repetitive research and organization tasks, such as pulling relevant cases from a legal research database.
Things to Note
- Using Claude Docs, Claude Slides, and Claude Design inside conversations is in beta and available on paid plans.
- Once an account moves to the new experience, it can't switch back to the separate "Chat" and "Cowork" options.
- Access to local files, the built-in browser, and computer use only works while Claude Desktop is open, and computer use is in beta on Pro and Max plans.
- By default, Claude asks before permanently deleting any files.
- Enterprise admins will be notified at least 30 days before any changes take effect for their organization, and they also choose when to turn on Claude Docs, Slides, and Design.
What's Still Unclear
The official announcement does not specify a timeline for when Team and Free plans will get the new experience. It also doesn't give details on the schedule for individual accounts, only confirming that the rollout happens gradually in stages.
