Anthropic has officially announced via its X (formerly Twitter) account that Claude Fable 5 subscription access on all paid plans will be extended through July 12. The original deadline was July 7, and Anthropic confirmed that the extension applies automatically — no action is required from users.
What Changed and Why It Matters
Fable 5 — one of Anthropic's most capable model releases, launched on June 9, 2026 — was temporarily suspended on June 12 following a US government export-control directive. Access was restored globally on July 1, 2026, after the export controls were lifted on June 30, per Anthropic's official statement. At the time of redeployment, Anthropic set July 7 as the cutoff for subscription inclusion: the benefit that lets paid-plan subscribers use Fable 5 within their existing weekly usage limits, at no extra charge, for up to 50% of those limits.
Anthropic's official X post on July 7 confirmed the deadline has been moved to July 12 (11:59:59 PM Pacific Time — equivalent to July 13 at 3:59:59 PM KST). The extension applies automatically to all eligible plans, with no settings change needed on your end.
Which Plans Are Covered?
According to Anthropic's official announcement, the extended subscription benefit covers Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans. Free-tier users are not included. The terms remain the same as at redeployment: Fable 5 can be used within your existing weekly usage limits, covering up to 50% of those limits, at no additional charge. No opt-in or settings change is required — the extension applies automatically.
What Happens After July 12?
Once the deadline passes, Fable 5 moves to a usage credits model — meaning it is billed separately from your subscription at standard API rates, rather than being included in your plan. Usage credits can be enabled under Settings > Usage on claude.ai. Importantly, Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models continue to work within normal plan limits and are not affected by this change.
Anthropic has stated that it aims to restore Fable 5 to subscription plans as capacity allows, though no specific date has been announced.
One Change to Be Aware Of in the Redeployed Model
Per Anthropic's official statement, the version of Fable 5 available since July 1 includes a strengthened cybersecurity classifier — an internal filter that screens certain types of requests. As a result, some coding and debugging requests may be answered by Claude Opus 4.8 instead of Fable 5. If you see a notice on screen indicating this, it means your request has been redirected to another model, not blocked entirely. General tasks such as writing, analysis, and summarization are unaffected.
A Note on the Deadline
The cutoff is July 12 at 11:59:59 PM Pacific Time. Anthropic has a prior pattern of announcing extensions close to deadlines — the current extension itself was announced on July 7, the original cutoff date. That said, no further extension has been confirmed as of this writing, so it is prudent to treat July 12 as the firm deadline and plan accordingly. Keeping an eye on Anthropic's official channels around that date is a reasonable precaution.
