“Is the Claude API free?” is one of the most common questions from developers. The short answer: the Claude API has no ongoing free plan. Still, there are real ways to use Claude for free — or for very little. This guide, based on official sources as of September 2026, explains the free routes and the actual pricing.
🟢 Model references match the current lineup · model notice · Fable subscription
Fable 5 and 5.1 subscription (updated September 7, 2026): Claude Fable 5.1, released September 1, 2026, is the current Fable model and Fable 5 is now legacy. Plan terms are the same for both — Max and Team Premium plans include Fable at up to 50% of the weekly usage limit; Pro and Team Standard use usage credits (
Update (September 27, 2026): Claude Opus 5.5 was released on September 22, 2026 and is now the current Opus model (API claude-opus-5-5, $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, down from Opus 5's $5/$25). Anthropic says it performs at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads. Opus 5 remains available but is marked legacy in the official model docs. Opus 5 prices and comparisons below reflect the pre-launch state and will be updated. Details: Claude Opus 5.5 complete guide.
First: the API and the “Claude app” are different products
To avoid confusion, let’s separate two things.
- The Claude app (claude.ai) — the chat service you use on web, mobile, and desktop. It has a free plan.
- The Claude API — the channel developers use to connect Claude into their own apps and services. It is pay-as-you-go.
Officially, Anthropic treats these as separate products. That means subscribing to Claude Pro or Max does not include free API access. The API is billed and funded separately in the Console (the developer dashboard). This is exactly where the “I pay for Claude — why is the API charged again?” confusion comes from.
1. There is no ongoing “free API plan”
The most important fact first: the Claude API has no permanent free tier that grants a monthly free allowance. The API is pay-as-you-go — you’re charged per token (a token is a small chunk of a word) processed on each request. Charges are deducted from a prepaid balance in the Console, and once that balance runs out, you must add credits or enable auto-reload to keep using it.
This is confirmed by official pricing and billing guidance. In other words, creating an API key is free, but sending real requests with that key requires a funded balance.
2. The small starter credit on new accounts
When you create a new API (Console) account, a small amount of free testing credit is reportedly granted. Multiple sources mention around $5. However, the official pricing page does not state an exact amount (as of September 2026), so treat this as a reference figure, not a confirmed value. Verify the actual amount at signup in the Console.
The purpose of this credit is “test lightly for a few days.” With the cheapest model, Haiku 4.5, a small credit covers a fair amount of testing, but it’s quickly consumed at real production scale. The key point: it’s a taste, not a lasting free tier.
3. Just want Claude for free? → the claude.ai Free plan
If your goal is “use Claude for free” rather than build software, the answer is not the API — it’s the Free plan on claude.ai. Per the official pricing page, the Free plan is $0 and includes the following (as of September 2026):
- Chat with Claude on web, iOS, Android, and desktop
- Code generation and data visualization, writing and editing
- Web search, memory across conversations, file creation and code execution, and more
Note that usage limits apply. If you hit them often, you’d consider paid plans like Pro ($17/mo billed annually, $20 monthly) or Max (from $100/mo). Again, these are chat-service prices, not API pricing.
4. Larger free credits: through programs
If you want to use the API for free at meaningful scale, you can apply to Anthropic’s credit programs. The commonly cited routes include:
- Startup Program — for early-stage startups. After review, it reportedly grants substantial API credits (sources mention up to tens of thousands of dollars).
- Claude for Open Source — reportedly launched in 2026, offering qualifying open-source maintainers a higher-tier plan (Claude Max) free for a limited period. (This is closer to a chat subscription than API credits.)
- Student / Campus programs — a student-builder program is reported to run on a cohort basis.
- Research / cloud partners — a program for researchers, or credit routes via cloud partners such as AWS and Google Cloud.
Important note: the exact amounts, eligibility, and application windows for these programs change frequently and vary by source. Figures here are for reference and are not guaranteed. Always confirm current terms on Anthropic’s official pages before applying.
Reference: actual Claude API pricing (as of September 2026)
If it’s not free, how much is it? Per the official pricing page, per-model rates are below. Units are USD per MTok (million tokens), with different rates for input (what you send) and output (what you receive).
| Model | Input / MTok | Output / MTok | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku 4.5 | $1 | $5 | Fastest, most affordable |
| Sonnet 5 | $2 (intro) | $10 (intro) | High-performance for coding/agents |
| Opus 5 | $5 | $25 | Complex, enterprise work |
| Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 | Top tier for long-running agents |
Sonnet 5’s $2/$10 is now the standard price — it was announced as introductory pricing through August 31, 2026, but Anthropic cancelled the planned increase to $3/$15 (official pricing docs, checked September 2, 2026). Other rates and time-based terms may change, so check the official page.
Practical tips to cut costs
It isn’t fully free, but you can do the same work far more cheaply. All of these are officially provided features.
- Batch processing — grouping requests that don’t need real-time responses gives a 50% discount on all models.
- Prompt caching — when repeatedly sending the same long instructions, caching sharply reduces input cost for the cached portion.
- Model choice — route simple classification/lookups to Haiku 4.5 and reserve Opus 5 for hard reasoning to save significantly.
- Code execution — sandboxed code execution is free for up to 50 hours per day per organization (only the excess is billed).
Summary
- There is no permanent free API plan. The API is pay-as-you-go; key creation is free, but requests need a balance.
- New accounts reportedly get a small starter credit (mentioned as ~$5, but no official amount is stated).
- To simply use Claude for free, the claude.ai Free plan is the answer (chat, not API).
- Larger free credits come from programs (startups, open source, students, research), conditionally. Always verify amounts and terms officially.
The pricing and policy details here are based on official sources as of September 2026 (Anthropic pricing page and others). Prices and program terms may change at Anthropic’s discretion, so verify the latest details on the official pricing page and in the Console before using or applying.
