“Can I only pay by card in Korea?”, “How do I get a receipt or tax invoice?”, “How much actually leaves my account in KRW?” — these come up a lot for Korean users. Because Anthropic (which runs Claude) is a US company, billing works a bit differently from a domestic service. This guide, based on official sources as of July 2026, explains it from a Korean user’s perspective.

Fable 5 and 5.1 subscription (updated September 7, 2026): Claude Fable 5.1, released September 1, 2026, is the current Fable model and Fable 5 is now legacy. Plan terms are the same for both — Max and Team Premium plans include Fable at up to 50% of the weekly usage limit; Pro and Team Standard use usage credits (
1. Payment method — card only
Officially, Claude Pro/Max can be paid only by credit or debit card. Bank transfer or invoice (bill) payment is generally supported on the Enterprise plan only. So individual and small users need a card that works for international payments.
Payments are processed through Stripe. Your card statement typically shows “ANTHROPIC” or “STRIPE.”
2. Billing currency — it leaves in USD
Since Anthropic is a US company, charges are in US dollars (USD). When you pay with a Korean card, the actual KRW amount depends on your card issuer’s exchange rate. In other words, the listed price (e.g., $20) plus the FX rate and a foreign-transaction fee is what’s billed in KRW.
Note: your card issuer’s foreign-transaction fee is usually a small percentage of the charge (reported around 1–3%), and it does not appear on the Anthropic invoice — it shows up on your card statement. The exact rate varies by issuer and card, so confirm with your card company.
3. How to get receipts / invoices
Where you find the invoice differs between subscriptions (Pro/Max) and the API.
- Pro/Max subscription — in the Claude app, go to Settings → Billing. A receipt email is also sent automatically to your billing email on each charge (subject: “Your receipt from Anthropic”).
- API / Console — go to console.anthropic.com → Settings → Billing → Invoice history to view or download each invoice. This section is visible only with a Billing or Admin role. “Download” saves the file directly; “View” opens a Stripe tab.
Officially, the details on an already-paid invoice (such as the name) cannot be edited afterward. So if you need a company name or tax details, it’s safer to enter them before the charge.
4. Business / tax handling (VAT, tax invoice)
If you’re a business, here’s what’s confirmed versus uncertain.
Confirmed:
- The billing settings (Settings → Billing → payment update form) include a field to enter a Tax or VAT ID. Businesses can enter tax info there.
- To receive invoices under a company name, check “Use a different name on invoices” and enter the company in “Bill to” when adding/updating the payment method.
- Tax/billing changes apply from the next billing cycle and are not applied retroactively to finalized invoices.
Uncertain / needs verification:
- Claude billing runs on Stripe Tax’s non-resident digital-services tax schemes, and this list is reported to include Korea (South Korea VAT). However, this is from third-party sources, and the exact rate and presentation for Korean users is hard to state definitively from official docs.
- Whether a Korean-style electronic tax invoice is issued is not confirmed in official sources. What Anthropic provides is a Stripe-generated invoice (PDF); how that is treated under Korean tax rules depends on your business, so consult a tax professional.
Accuracy not guaranteed: tax handling varies by business type and transaction. This is general information, not tax advice. Always confirm VAT deduction and tax-invoice handling with a tax professional.
5. When your card is declined
Because it’s an international payment, a card you use fine domestically can still fail specifically on Claude. Known causes:
- International use blocked — overseas use disabled on the card (enable it in your card issuer’s app)
- Billing-address mismatch — the address you entered doesn’t match your card issuer’s records
- 3D Secure (extra authentication) failure
- Unsupported billing location, insufficient funds, or an issuer-side block
Fix order: enable international payments in your card app, match the billing address exactly to your card records, and complete bank (3DS) authentication. If it still fails, contacting your card issuer is faster than retrying repeatedly.
Summary
- Card only (Pro/Max), charged in USD → KRW depends on your card’s FX rate + foreign-transaction fee.
- Receipts: subscriptions via Settings → Billing; API via Console → Billing → Invoice history (plus auto email).
- Businesses: enter a Tax/VAT ID in billing settings before the charge; finalized invoices can’t be edited.
- Korean tax-invoice issuance is not officially confirmed → consult a tax professional for tax handling.
The billing and receipt steps here are based on official help-center sources (support.claude.com and others) as of July 2026, with some items (currency, tax schemes) cross-checked from third-party sources; points that can’t be stated definitively are marked as such. Screens and policies may change, so verify the latest details in the official billing FAQ and the payment screen before paying.
