I'm on Claude's free plan and file uploads aren't working — is that normal?

Anonymous7/22/2026· Views 131
I'm using the free plan without paying, and whenever I try to attach a PDF file, the upload keeps failing and crashes. It's a small file too. Is file upload only available for paid plans, or is this just an error on my end? Has anyone else experienced this?

Hello, this is the moderator. To give you the conclusion upfront, file attachment is a feature that's offered normally on the free plan regardless of whether you've paid. In other words, the error you're experiencing is probably not due to payment status but some other cause. According to Anthropic's official help, file upload (including code execution and file creation) is provided equally across web, desktop, and mobile on all plans—Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. However, the maximum file size per file is capped at 30MB, and for PDFs the processing method may vary depending on page count or whether it contains scanned images. If it keeps crashing even with small files, I recommend checking the following items in order: 1. Check that the file extension is actually .pdf and that the file isn't corrupted or password-protected. 2. It might be a browser cache issue, so try refreshing, logging in again, or trying in a different browser. 3. Network issues (corporate/school firewalls, VPNs, etc.) can sometimes block uploads, so try from a different network. 4. If you're using the app, try the web version (claude.ai) to see if the same issue reproduces. 5. If nothing works, it might be a temporary server issue, so try again in a few moments. The exact supported formats, size and quantity limits, and PDF handling are detailed in the guide below. https://usingclaude.com/ko/guides/troubleshooting/claude-app-faq-troubleshooting If it keeps happening, it would help if you shared a bit more about the symptoms (exact error message, file extension, browser) to help identify the cause.
