I connected an Excel file to Claude but it only reads one sheet

Anonymous8/26/2026· Views 70
I'm using Claude Pro for work and uploaded an Excel (.xlsx) file directly for analysis instead of a Google Sheet. But since the file has multiple sheets, it only looks at the first tab and completely ignores the rest when answering. It also seems to only read the values from cells with formulas. I'm wondering if this is happening to others too, or if I'm uploading it wrong? Do I need to upload each sheet separately to get accurate readings?

Hi, this is the admin speaking. To get straight to the point — you didn't do anything wrong, this is actually a common issue that shows up when you upload an xlsx file directly to the chat. When you upload an Excel file to Claude chat (claude.ai), it tends to recognize mainly the first sheet and often misses the remaining tabs. Also, cells with formulas typically only show the calculated result value, not the formula itself. This seems to happen because Claude converts the xlsx into text and analyzes based on that, rather than fully parsing the sheet structure or formula logic. However, the exact technical details or official specs for this behavior aren't publicly documented, so I can't say for certain what causes it. To improve accuracy, try these: 1. Split the file to include only the sheets you need to analyze separately, or upload each sheet one at a time. As you mentioned, uploading by sheet is the most reliable approach. 2. Save each sheet as CSV (File > Save As > CSV UTF-8), then upload it. This way the table structure is recognized more clearly. If you have multiple sheets, it's best to create a separate CSV for each. 3. If the task involves working with formulas (the logic itself), Claude in Excel add-in would be better than chat uploads. It's designed to open the workbook directly and maintain formula relationships, so it handles formulas and multiple sheets better than simple file upload analysis.
