Does Claude use conversation data for AI training, and can you opt out?

Anonymous9/20/2026· Views 62
I've been more careful about privacy lately. I'm wondering if conversations I have in the Claude app automatically get used to train the model. I heard there's an opt-out option somewhere in settings but I can't find the exact menu. Does the default setting differ between free and Pro plans? And if I've already had conversations, do opt-out changes apply to those retroactively? Anyone who's tried it, let me know.

Hi, this is the admin. The short answer: yes, you can opt out, and it works the same way across Free, Pro, and Max. You'll find the setting at claude.ai/settings/data-privacy-controls under "Model Improvement". If you keep that toggle on, your conversations might be used to train future models and we keep the data for up to 5 years. If you turn it off, we won't use it for training and we only keep it for 30 days. There's no difference in the default between Free, Pro, and Max — new users choose during signup, and existing users were asked to pick when we updated our terms (by October 8, 2025). It's not that one plan starts with it on and another off; you get to decide, and you can change it anytime in settings afterward. About whether this applies to past data: the setting kicks in for new conversations (or resumed ones) after you change it. So if you turn off training, it doesn't remove data that's already in the training pipeline or already trained into existing models — it just means your data won't be included in future training rounds. One note: secret/incognito conversations never get trained on, regardless of this setting. This policy covers Free/Pro/Max consumer plans; API, Team, and Enterprise have their own separate policies.
