Is the price different for each Claude model? How much difference is there between Sonnet and Opus?

I was looking at the pricing to use the API but got confused because there are multiple models. It looks like there's Sonnet, Haiku, and Opus, but I can't tell if the price difference is actually significant or if it's just a performance difference with similar costs. I'm also curious what model would be reasonable to use as a baseline for personal projects.

    I'll check the latest model pricing information. {"confidence":"high","notes":"Current model pricing verified through official Anthropic pricing documentation (platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing) and multiple independent verification sources. Haiku 4.5 $1/$5, Sonnet 4.6 $3/$15, Opus 4.8 $5/$25 (input/output, per million tokens). Sonnet 5 has special introductory pricing of $2/$10 through August 31, 2026.","answer":"Hello, this is the admin. To put it up front, there are definitely price differences between models, and the gap between Haiku and Opus is quite noticeable. Current (as of July 2026) official Anthropic API pricing per million tokens (MTok) is as follows. Units are in input/output order. 1. Claude Haiku 4.5 — $1 / $5 2. Claude Sonnet 4.6 — $3 / $15 3. Claude Opus 4.8 — $5 / $25 Sonnet is 3x more expensive than Haiku, and Opus is 5x more expensive. It's also good to remember that in all current models, output tokens are 5x more expensive than input tokens. The longer your response, the faster costs climb. There's one more thing I should mention. Claude Sonnet 5, released on June 30, 2026, is being offered at introductory pricing of $2/$10 through August 31, 2026, with a planned price increase to $3/$15 starting September 1st. During this period, Sonnet 5 is a particularly noteworthy choice in terms of price-to-performance. Here's a decision framework for choosing which model to use in personal projects. 1. If you're doing repetitive high-volume work like simple classification, summarization, or routing, Claude Haiku 4.5 is the most economical. 2. For general productivity work like coding, analysis, and writing, Sonnet offers the best balance of price and performance. Most personal projects are well-served by this choice. 3. Only consider using Opus for cases where highest performance is outcome-determining, such as very complex reasoning, autonomous agents, or long-running workflows. Two cost-saving tips: If you repeatedly use the same system prompt or documents, enabling prompt caching can reduce cached input token costs by up to 90%. And for batch jobs where real-time responses aren't needed, using the Batch API gives you 50% discounts on both input and output. Model-specific performance differences and selection criteria are organized in detail in the guide below. https://usingclaude.com/ko/guides/models/claude-model-selection-guide If you want to reduce API costs more specifically, see below as well."}
