A Claude model I was using in the app suddenly disappeared from the list—why?

I was using a model just a few days ago, and today it's completely gone from the selection dropdown. I didn't see any announcement about this. Is it normal for older model versions to be retired without warning like this? Or is it just my account? Also, I'm worried whether the saved conversations in my project settings will stay intact.

Hey, it's the admins here. To cut to the chase: this is very likely normal behavior, and it's not just a problem with your account. Anthropic officially manages the process of phasing out older models. Anthropic manages model lifecycles across four stages: Active, Legacy, Deprecated, and Retired. For customers with active API deployments, they provide at least 60 days' notice via email and official documentation before retiring a model. That said, the 60-day notice policy is explicitly stated for API users, so it's not completely clear from the official docs whether the same applies to the model selection list in the claude.ai app. You might have missed the notification email or checked too late. Your saved conversations (previous conversations stored in your projects) won't be deleted and will remain accessible as is. However, when you try to continue with a new message in that conversation, you won't be able to select the old model anymore—you'll need to switch to a different model to keep going. The existing conversation content itself won't disappear, so no need to worry about that. Here are some things worth checking: 1. Search the Claude Help Center (support.claude.com) for that model name to see if there was a retirement notice. 2. Check your account email to see if Anthropic sent any model-related notification emails. 3. Also check your project settings or organization default model settings to see if an alternative model was automatically assigned.
