When you first open claude.ai, you'll notice there's no password field — and that's by design. Claude uses two passwordless methods: sign in with your Google account, or click a secure link sent to your email. This guide walks you through both options step by step, so you can get into Claude without any guesswork.

Before You Start — What You Need
- Where to go: claude.ai in any web browser, or the Claude desktop or mobile app
- You need either: a Google account, or an email address where you can receive messages
- Plan: A free account is enough to log in. You don't need a paid plan (Pro, Max, etc.) to follow this guide.
- Password: There is no Claude-specific password. You won't need to create one — none exists.
Option 1 — Log In with Google
If you have a Google account, this is the fastest route. No email check required.
- Go to claude.ai. On the login screen, click Continue with Google.
- A Google sign-in pop-up appears. Enter your Google email address and click Next.
- Enter your Google password and click Next.
- You're in — Claude's chat screen opens, and your name or initials appear in the bottom-left corner.
Note: If your Google account has two-step verification — an extra confirmation step when signing in — Google will ask you to verify your identity first. Complete it the same way you normally do when logging into Google.
Option 2 — Log In with an Email Link
Prefer not to use Google, or don't have a Google account? Use this method instead. Claude sends you a magic link — a one-time login link you click to authenticate without a password.
- On the login screen, type your email address into the input field and click Continue with email.
- Check your inbox. You'll receive an email with the subject line "Secure link to log in to Claude.ai".
- Open the email and click the login link inside.
- You're in — Claude's chat screen opens automatically.
If You Open the Link on a Different Device
Say you requested the login email on your laptop, but opened the link on your phone. According to the official support documentation, clicking the link from a different device will generate a verification code instead of logging you in directly. Note the code on your phone, then type it into the original device (your laptop, in this example) to complete sign-in.
Heads up: The login link is single-use and expires after a short time. If it no longer works, simply go back to the login screen, re-enter your email address, and request a fresh link.
Using the Same Account Across Multiple Devices
According to the official support documentation, whether you use the web browser, desktop app, or mobile app, signing in with the same email address you used to create your account takes you to the same Claude account. For example, if you signed up on a web browser, you can access your conversations on the Claude mobile app by entering that same email address when prompted.
Switching Between Multiple Accounts
If you have both a personal Claude account and a Team or Enterprise plan account tied to the same email address, you can switch between them without logging out.
- Click your initials icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Select the account you want to switch to from the list.
- A checkmark (✓) indicates your currently active account.
Common Issues & Fixes
Login Email Isn't Arriving
If the email doesn't show up within a few minutes, work through these steps in order, as recommended in the official support documentation:
- Check your spam and junk folders — email filters sometimes misdirect automated messages.
- If you use a work or school email, check a quarantine folder, which some mail servers use to hold external links.
- Add @mail.anthropic.com to your email allowlist (also called a whitelist — a list of approved senders).
- Wait a few minutes, then return to the login screen and request a new link.
Important: Business, government, and .edu email addresses are sometimes blocked by strict security policies. If you're on one of these, contact your IT department and ask them to allow messages from @mail.anthropic.com.
I Got the Email But Can't Log In
Take a close look at any error message on screen. If you're creating an account for the first time and see a message asking for your phone number, that's a separate verification step — refer to the phone number verification guide on claude.com. For other errors, visit the Claude status page (status.anthropic.com) to check for any known outages or maintenance. If an incident is listed, wait for it to be resolved, then try again.
Unlinking Your Google Account
Want to stop using Google sign-in and switch to the email link method? You can disconnect the two at any time. Here are the steps from the official support documentation:
- Go to https://myaccount.google.com/connections.
- Find Claude by Anthropic in the list and click on it.
- Click See details.
- Click Stop using Sign in with Google.
After this, simply use the email link method the next time you visit claude.ai. This step is also worth trying if your Google login is behaving unexpectedly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create a password for my Claude account?
According to the official support documentation, it is not currently possible to create a dedicated password for your Claude account. The two available methods — Google sign-in and email link — are the only options.
Can I change my login method later?
Yes. You can unlink your Google account at any time using the steps above, and then switch to the email link method going forward.
I'm on a paid plan (Pro, Max, etc.) — is my login any different?
The login process is the same regardless of which plan you're on. You'll use either Google sign-in or an email link. That said, the official documentation notes that paid subscription plans are designed for ordinary use within Anthropic's own apps (claude.ai, desktop app, mobile app, Claude Code). If you want to connect Claude to a third-party tool or build something with Claude, the recommended approach is API key authentication — a developer credential obtained through the Claude Console, not a standard account login.
