What Is Claude Design? Anthropic's Chat-to-Canvas Design Tool

Claude Design is Anthropic Labs' tool that turns chat into prototypes, slides, and mockups on a canvas. A guide based on official information.

Claude Design is a visual-work tool from Anthropic Labs where you describe what you want in chat and Claude builds a design on a canvas. The screen is split — chat on the left, canvas on the right — so you explain your idea in plain language, Claude generates a working design, and you refine it through conversation. The point is getting from an idea to something visual without opening a design tool first. (As of June 2026 · Official: support.claude.com)

What is Claude Design

Claude Design is a conversational visual-creation tool from Anthropic Labs (the team that ships Anthropic's experimental products). Instead of laying things out by hand on a blank canvas, you describe what you want in plain language; Claude produces the result and you refine it by talking. It isn't a feature buried inside regular chat — it's a separate product with its own URL (claude.ai/design), its own canvas, and its own export options, currently in research preview.

What you can build

Anthropic says it can create visuals such as:

  • Website/app prototypes and interactive screens
  • Slides, pitch decks, and one-pagers
  • Product mockups and marketing pages/assets

It targets two groups: designers who want to explore more directions quickly, and people without design experience (founders, PMs, marketers) who want to turn an idea into something visual.

How it works

The flow is simple. Describe what you want in chat and a draft appears on the canvas; from there, iteration is the point. You refine three ways — more instructions in chat, inline comments pinned to elements, and a controls panel that adjusts spacing, color, typography, and layout. Anthropic notes that "the first generation is a starting point; the real value comes from iterating."

Export and handoff

Finished designs export to PPTX, PDF, Canva files, ZIP, or standalone HTML. Exporting to Canva delivers editable, collaborative files. To move into development, you can hand off a bundle to Claude Code in one step. It also offers multiplayer features like link sharing and collaborative editing.

Getting started · availability

Claude Design is at claude.ai/design. Per reporting, it launched on April 17, 2026, and at launch ran on Claude Opus 4.7 (the model it uses may change). It's included in existing Claude subscriptions (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise) at no separate price, and usage counts toward your current subscription limits.

See the Claude pricing overview. Comparing it with Artifacts (which build outputs inside chat) makes the difference clear.

Things to know

Because it's a research preview, Anthropic documents a few known limitations.

  • Inline comments — they sometimes disappear before Claude reads them; paste the comment text into chat as a workaround.
  • Compact view — the compact layout can trigger save errors; switch to full view and retry.
  • Large codebases — linking a very large repo can cause lag or browser issues; link a specific subdirectory rather than a whole monorepo.
