If you use claude.ai every day, learning just a few shortcuts makes it much faster. And shortcuts are only the start — calling features like quick search, incognito chat, and extended thinking with a single key keeps your flow smooth. You can see claude.ai's full list of shortcuts anytime by pressing Ctrl + / in the app. (The list below is for Windows; on Mac you usually use ⌘(Command) instead of Ctrl. Shortcuts may change between versions.)
General shortcuts
Ctrl + K opens quick chat and search — handy for finding a past conversation or starting a new one when your chats pile up. Ctrl + Shift + I opens an incognito chat for a one-off conversation with no history, and Ctrl + . collapses or expands the sidebar for more screen space. Ctrl + / opens this very shortcut list, and Ctrl + Shift + , opens settings.
Shortcuts while chatting
In the chat box, Enter sends a message and Shift + Enter adds a new line for multi-line input. Ctrl + Shift + E toggles extended thinking (thinking longer), and Ctrl + U opens file upload. If an answer is heading the wrong way, press Esc to stop the response and try again.
Where do I find or set shortcuts?
There are two ways to open the shortcut list. The fastest is pressing Ctrl + / in claude.ai; via the menu, go to Profile (account avatar, bottom-left) → Learn more → Shortcuts.
Settings open from the same profile menu under Settings (Ctrl + Shift + ,). Note that this screen in the claude.ai web and desktop apps is for viewing shortcuts; rebinding them to different keys is not offered here (as observed). If you want to remap keys, the terminal tool Claude Code lets you customize them with /keybindings — a separate tool from the web app.
A few ways to go faster
Once shortcuts are part of your flow, you can use them like this.
Beyond shortcuts, you can pick the model and thinking level below the input box, dictate with the microphone icon, and use the + button to pull in files or material from connected apps (such as Google Drive).
Wrap-up
In short, just learning to find fast with Ctrl + K, break lines with Shift + Enter, stop with Esc, and check the full list with Ctrl + / makes claude.ai noticeably quicker. Shortcuts can vary by OS and version, so check the most accurate list right in the Ctrl + / panel. For Claude Code's terminal shortcuts, see the separate Claude Code cheat sheet.
