"Is Claude free?" is one of the most common questions. The short answer: you can start for free, and you move up to a paid plan when you need more usage and features. This guide breaks down Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise based on Anthropic's official pricing page.

Can I really use Claude for free?
Yes — there is a Free plan. Sign up at claude.ai with no credit card and chat with Claude on web, iOS, Android, and desktop. The Free plan includes web search, memory across conversations, file creation and code execution, connectors (remote MCP), and extended thinking for complex work.
The Free plan does have usage limits. When you hit a limit, you wait for it to reset. Also, the terminal-based developer tool Claude Code is not included on Free (it requires Pro or above). For limits, how to check usage, and reset timing, see the usage limits guide.
How do the paid plans differ?
For individuals there are two: Pro and Max.
- Pro — $20/month ($17/month billed annually, $200 up front). More usage than Free, plus Claude Code, Cowork, Design, unlimited projects, Research, more models, and Microsoft 365 / Outlook integration. For how to manage, cancel, or get a refund, see the billing and subscription guide.
- Max — from $100/month. Choose 5x ($100) or 20x ($200) more usage than Pro, with higher output limits and priority access at busy times.
For teams and organizations there are Team (5–150 users; standard seat $20/mo billed annually, $25 monthly; premium seat $100) and Enterprise ($20/seat plus usage at API rates, with audit logs, SCIM, HIPAA option, and more).
Free or Pro — which should I pick?
For light use — questions, translation, summaries — Free is enough. If you write at length daily, code with Claude Code, work on documents, or switch between models, Pro fits. If you use Claude intensively for hours a day and keep hitting limits, consider Max.
Note: prices, plans, and included features may change at Anthropic's discretion. This guide is based on the official pricing page (claude.com/pricing); promotions, discounts, and student offers vary over time.
