Sooner or later most Claude users hit the moment where the free tier is not enough, and then the moment where Pro is not enough. Based on the official Help Center, this guide covers every upgrade path — Free to Pro to Max — plus how billing is prorated and how to switch from monthly to annual.
🟢 Model references match the current lineup · model notice · Fable subscription
Fable 5 and 5.1 subscription (updated September 7, 2026): Claude Fable 5.1, released September 1, 2026, is the current Fable model and Fable 5 is now legacy. Plan terms are the same for both — Max and Team Premium plans include Fable at up to 50% of the weekly usage limit; Pro and Team Standard use usage credits (
Where do you upgrade?
The fastest route is claude.ai/upgrade. Log in, open that address, and you will see the plans and prices for your region. If you already pay for a plan, you can also adjust it from Settings > Billing in claude.ai.
Free to Pro
From a free account, open claude.ai/upgrade, pick Pro, and pay by card — it takes effect immediately. Per the official Help Center, Pro is $20 per month in the US, with local-currency pricing in supported regions and region-dependent tax display. Choosing annual billing charges a discounted rate once per year. Only credit and debit cards are accepted. For what Pro actually includes, see our plan comparison guide.
Pro to Max
Moving from Pro to Max applies immediately, with billing adjusted on a prorated basis for the remainder of your current cycle — the unused portion of what you already paid for Pro is credited against the Max charge (per the official Help Center).
One combination deserves care: annual Pro to Max. If the remaining balance on your annual Pro plan is larger than the Max price, the difference becomes an account credit applied to future subscription costs — but to receive it, the billing address on your Max purchase must match your previous subscription's billing address. If your address has changed, the official guidance is to cancel Pro, wait until the subscription end date, then sign up for Max with the new address.
Max 5x or Max 20x?
Max comes in two tiers. Per the official docs, Max 5x offers 5 times, and Max 20x offers 20 times, the per-session usage of Pro. The official guidance: 5x suits frequent users across varied tasks; 20x suits daily users who do most of their work with Claude. Max also carries weekly usage limits (one that applies across all models and a second tied to a specific model family), and your next reset time is shown in Settings > Usage. For the full limit system, see the usage limits guide.
Switching from monthly to annual
To move a monthly Pro subscription to annual billing, go to Settings > Billing and click "Adjust plan" next to your subscription details. Any remaining time on the monthly subscription is credited toward the annual invoice (per the official Help Center).
Downgrading or cancelling
Downgrade steps, refunds, and payment-error fixes are covered in our separate billing and cancellation guide. Note that if your payment method fails, your account can be downgraded automatically — so if Claude suddenly behaves like the free tier, check your recent payment status under Settings > Billing first.
Frequently asked questions
- Are there discounts or coupons? — Officially, no standing discounts are offered on paid plans and the support team cannot issue one-off coupons. Annual billing is effectively the only built-in saving.
- Can I change my billing date? — There is no direct option; the documented workaround is to cancel and resubscribe on your preferred date.
- Does upgrading cover Claude Code too? — Yes. One Pro or Max subscription covers Claude on web/apps and Claude Code in the terminal, with shared usage limits. See the Claude Code pricing guide for details.
